5 Rules to Stay Fit Over the Holidays

The festive season is gaining momentum and Christmas is fast approaching. It's a time to rest and re-energise for the year ahead. We all look forward to a break, but for many of us holidays mean lots of food, alcohol and not much movement.

The good news is that you can change that around and enjoy the season without the guilt or the extra kilograms. Use your time wisely and boost your fitness these holidays. Exercise regularly, eat good food and sleep well. Follow my 5 rules for holiday fitness success.

1. Be active

You can still have a break from the norm and boost your fitness by mixing up activities you enjoy. If you're a runner, explore your surroundings and take family or friends along. Try water jogging, in water from ankle to hip deep.

2. Plan healthy meals

It can be hard to go past the local delicacies at your holiday destination. If you're tempted, eat like the French: tiny bites, petites bouchées, of delights and only as a treat. For the rest of the day, plan healthy meals and stick to them.

3. Sleep well

A good night's sleep is essential for your body to function. Plan your rest just like your meals. Nap during the day for a much needed siesta.

4. Be social

Parties and gatherings can be daunting when the buffet and platters come right to you. An easy and fun way to spend your time is to be social and talk. Drink a glass of water regularly to help stop cravings. Step away from the buffet and the waiter.

5. Be inspired

What inspires you is very personal. Think about what gets you excited and fill yourself with positive thoughts to stay on track. Know that you are worthy, and be your best ever.
